Protocol Afro is a six-piece Indonesian band based in Jakarta. They called their music as “inconsistent alternative pop”, something anthemic well danceable music inspired by The Kooks, Bloc Party and MGMT. The band formed in 2007, with Ditto, Giano, Panji, Mayo, Ferdi, and Kristian on board playing their music for some local music fest in Jakarta. 2011 been a good year for Protocol Afro, listed as Singapore’s Baybeats Fest performer, invited to Hello ASEAN, and buzzing national wide by performing their first national TV gig on 811 Show Metro TV. The story gets better and better, couple days ago they told us that they will release a full studio album in 2012, yet still didn’t give us an exact date for it.
While waiting for their upcoming album, let’s take a look into their 2011 EP, Protocol Afro EP. The EP contain four tracks, two of them are singles that came from their early days in music on 2010, Maling and Radio. Another two tracks are their third single titled Music (Dance With Me) and a live session from a track titled Sunday Morning. Maling and Radio will give you catchy tunes with some raw sounds, consider that these songs came from their early career. Some of you might think that Protocol Afro’s music sounds like Goodnight Electric when listening to Radio, like I do. Maling, in the other hand, sounds like one of Arctic Monkeys’.
It’s getting exciting when you listen to Music (Dance With Me), in addition to their danceable music, this song is definitely well arranged. This is how Protocol Afro bind a simple lyric, with an attractive music that will make you dance all along without being worried what’s coming after the song ends. And when we continue to Sunday Morning, we’ll get into their heads. This inconsistent alternative pop music was plotted to be some kind of shield from people that categorize music in boxes based on their genres, so Protocol Afro can write and play their music whatever they want without being dictated by media nor the market. Unpredictable, suprising. These blokes doing a good job making me curious about the upcoming album.
Their self-titled EP is a good album, you can order a copy at Indische Partij Records’ page after listen to some teaser above. Enjoy!
